BT wants in on the Fon

Good news for the Spanish open wifi maverick Fon today. BT has not only confirmed itself as an investor in the company, but it’s also done an about face and is letting its own users sign up to the service. It’s a good deal for BT broadband users - they get access to 190,000 new wifi access points worldwide. But it’s not bad for the Foneros too - they get access to 2,000 BT Openzone hotspots, which are likely to be placed in cities and airports - places where you don’t generally get Fon subscribers - as well as how ever many BT subs sign up for the deal.

It’ll be interesting to see how many BT users go for it. But it would also be interesting to find out how BT’s going to make money off it. Fon users that resell their wifi access share revenues with the company, but Fon doesn’t say how many of the 300,000 + remaining subs that are not open wifi subscribers are selling their wares and how many are just roaming end users. Will there be enough Fon to go around?

The Eurotariff arrives

Viviane Reding’s much-vaunted Eurotariff arrived this weekend. The European Commissioner for Information Society and Media has been aggressively pushing for a “fairer” deal on roaming for subscribers who travel across borders.

Sunday was the official deadline for European carriers to introduce tariffs no higher than 49 eurocents per minute for calls made abroad and no higher than 24 eurocents for calls received abroad, excluding VAT.

The Commission reckons EU consumers who have signed up to schemes launched prior to the deadline have been paying up to 70 per cent less for using their mobile phone in Europe.

Welcome

Welcome to the new look telecoms.com. As you’ll see, we’ve spent the rainy summer months having a bit of a tidy up, rearranging the furniture and generally making space to pack more content in.

We’ve increased the amount of daily news so you can keep track of all the latest happenings in the world of telecoms – either on the site itself, via multiple RSS feeds or delivered straight into your inbox. We’re also including more exclusive content by way of features and analysis, executive interviews, statistics and company profiles.

Our industry experts will also have a greater presence on the site, giving you exclusive commentary and opinion on events as they happen. Feel free to enter into discussion and debate with them on the telecoms.com blog.

We now have three new channels dedicated to WiMAX, IMS and FMC, as well as a TV channel, TelecomsVISION TV, which features on location footage and interviews from telecoms events around the world.

But there’s plenty going on behind the scenes too. Over the next few weeks you will find more advanced search functionality, putting you in touch with exactly what you’re looking for in a quicker and easier fashion. Unfortunately all these changes mean that we’re going to have to ask you to re-register. The good news is that the registration page has been cleaned up too, so you should be logged in again within a minute.

All I can say now is go take a look around and enjoy,

James Middleton
